Disciples in Danger: Egypt
Editor’s note: The author, Gilbert Wandera, is a member of the Nairobi church in Kenya, and his work as a sports writer takes him to various countries across Africa. In January, Gilbert visited Egypt. Upon his return, he and his wife, Gertrude, shared this message with their region of the Nairobi Church of Christ to help the disciples understand what Christians in the Middle East endure. This sharing also kicked off a prayer campaign in Nairobi for the situation and the saints in Egypt.
Message from Disciple in Cairo
Thanks for your concerns and prayers -- they are needed. As you know the main protest is in downtown where it connects all the areas together. What is affecting us is that prisoners escaped from prisons and they are attacking the houses and stealing them. They are criminals and you can imagine what they can do. So every man in each building is obliged to go down and protect his building with other men. Our street got attacked 5 times and I heard that lots of disciple faced the same thing
Cairo Disciples Safe and Need Prayers
CAIRO: We finally got through to Moufid Tohme, our Middle East contact in Beirut today. Moufid told HotNews that things in Cairo are obviously in turmoil. Huge anti-government demonstrations fill the streets as can be seen on the news. The disciples in Cairo are all doing well, but they are facing obvious dangers. There is little police protection. When the jails emptied out, neighborhoods had to team up to form security brigades. Hunger is driving many to steal and loot.
See this phone interview with Moufid as he updates us on the situation with the disciples in Cairo and Beirut.
Tunisia: Government Collapses, Riots Break Out, Disciples in Hiding
There is serious political upheavel in Tunisia, where there are 6 disciples, including my husband, who went on a contract job 3 weeks ago. They live and work there and their children go to school there. Right now they are all hiding in their homes, as rioting, looting and shooting go on in the city all around them.
