Kamla, Courageous Woman in Kathmandu

Written by  Poonam Dahal, Kathmandu, Nepal Sunday, 22 November 2009 00:45

To foreigners and tourists Nepal is a beautiful country, and indeed it is. The women of Nepal though don’t get to enjoy that beauty very much. Most of them live a life of hardship and suffering. They get married young, don’t go to school, and toil from morning till evening to make ends meet.

Kamla is one such woman. Married at a young age like most women in Nepal, she was a mother by the age of sixteen. Her husband is an alcoholic like most men in that country. Poverty and despair drives the men to various addictions while the women bear the burden of the family.

Never having received much of an education Kamla had to find a way to make a living to support her family. She has a son and a daughter in their teens. Kamla is now thirty two years old. She runs a poultry business out of her home and takes care of her family that way. It is a hard life but she manages.

The hardest thing for her is her husband’s drinking. Even though her husband has a job he spends all his salary on his addiction. The family have lost everything over the years due to that. Kamla lived a life without hope until one of her neighbors, Hariyama, shared with her about Jesus. Kamla saw a ray of hope for the first time in her life. She came to church, studied the Bible, and was baptized.

That in itself took a lot of courage. Women live very traditional lives in Nepal. They are not encouraged to go out alone. They certainly do not make independent decisions such as becoming a disciple of Jesus. Kamla is a woman of courage though.

After her baptism Kamla’s husband became enraged. He did what people do in Nepal in such situations. He called all his friends, neighbors, and relatives from his native village to come and persecute Kamla. She did not give in.

The crowd then went to Hariyama’s house and even to her work place and threatened her also. Hariyama responded by preaching to them about the truth of the Gospel. Hariyama’s faith inspired Kamla to stay strong and together they faced the challenge.

Kamla remained firm in her convictions, and as a result, her sixteen year old daughter studied the Bible after witnessing her mother’s courage. They are now both disciples in the Kathmandu church, inspiring others to have the same faith they have.
