August 11, 2014: Randy Jordan, HOPE worldwide’s CEO, announced today that African affiliates and their leaders are closely monitoring the spread of the Ebola virus in West Africa and are considering an appropriate plan of action. HOPE worldwide, through its Health & Social Services Division, is tracking developments in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea which have been worst affected. Nigeria has also recently reported new cases of Ebola.To date, nearly 1,800 cases have been confirmed and 961 deaths reported.
Drs. Marc Aguirre and Mark Ottenweller are in contact with church leaders from those countries and in the region, and will be regularly monitoring both the health and socio-economic situation in those countries. Currently, no disciples are known to be infected by the deadly virus. Churches are taking bold steps to raise awareness about the disease and implement good hygiene practices. As businesses slow or close down and population movement is restricted, our biggest concern right now if the rising cost of food and other basic necessities in the cities.
HOPE worldwide will be providing weekly updates on the outbreak as well as ways to support these countries.
