As disciples, we all know that God is calling us over and over to love and serve the poor (Psalm 82:3; Proverbs 14:31; James 1:27). He also shows special love for the children (Luke 9:47-48, 18:15-17).
This month I had the incredible opportunity to follow Jesus’ steps in serving and loving the poor, but especially His children. A group of disciples from the San Diego Church of Christ and Lubbock Mission Church joined forces for the trip. Led by Cindy Wilkinson from Lubbock, TX and Hannah Reyes, an amazing teen from San Diego, CA, a group of 26 new friends went on a mission trip to La Mision, Mexico. The group was made of marrieds with their children, three campus students, two single sisters and teens. God used us as His feet and hands.
We led a summer Bible School at a daycare center called Open Arms. Also, we spent time loving and playing with the children from a nearby orphanage, Door of Faith. Who would imagine that through giving, we were the ones receiving so much love? Through the singing, Bible class, games and craft, we touched those little hearts and in return they shared what they were learning.
It was great to hear the children sharing about what they learned each day. Some of the things they shared were: “Jesus was more than a good man.” “He did miracles.” “He died, but resurrected.” “We need to defend Jesus’ message.” Sometimes they moved me to tears.
For the first time, this year we had a "Family Day" for all the families from the daycare and we had an attendance of 150 people. Thanks to God we were able to feed all of them and we had a great time!
Now we are all back to our homes and I pray that we keep alive the message written on our hearts. I pray that each day we get up wanting to defend Jesus’ message. I pray that all of us want to share the good news. I pray that all of us want to continue serving and loving like Jesus did.
