The Phoenix Church of Christ invites all former members and current friends to a worship and fellowship on November 24. We will be celebrating our 30 years of worshipping and serving God together and pursuing the great commission in metropolitan Phoenix. We will meet at Celebrity Theatre at 440 N. 32nd Street in Phoenix where we met from 1988-89. Mike Rock will return to Phoenix for the day to preach for that service.
Like our International Churches of Christ fellowship, our roots are deep in the campus ministry movement of the 70‘s and 80‘s. In 1983 a group of about 40 people, including college students and several couples, were part of the campus ministry of the then Metro Church of Christ (which met in West Phoenix). We were holding Sunday services, weekly devotionals and Bible Studies in Tempe, at Arizona State University, and on community colleges throughout Phoenix. That year we were joined by a group of singles and couples from Fort Collins, Colorado who had been involved in campus ministry at Colorado State University, which was led by Ronnie and Tana Worsham and Mike and Libby Rock. Mike became the campus minister in June 1983 and Ronnie led the ministry in the East Valley. We continued worshipping on Sunday evenings with the Metro Church until November. At that time we began meeting as a separate congregation in Tempe as the East Valley Church of Christ. The group grew and reached a milestone in the fall of 1987 when the name was changed to the Phoenix Valley Church of Christ and we began meeting in Phoenix. Both the Rocks and the Worsham’s had moved to San Diego
During the next several years after 1988 many disciples moved from Phoenix to Boston, San Diego, Los Angeles and other cities to participate in church plantings and to strengthen existing churches. In the past decade and more we have been blessed in return with many disciples who have moved from coast to coast. We all look forward to celebrating God’s power and goodness with returning members.
