Unfortunately the pressure to succeed and perform took its toll. The expectations put on her were too much for her to handle. Hours and hours of daily swimming practice added to a demanding academic schedule were unbearable. She also had to train and compete away from home a lot and she missed her family and friends. Her life was anything but normal. Yvonne felt pushed beyond reason and started suffering from eating disorders and anxiety.
Teens anywhere face a lot of challenges but when one is pushed to achieve so much at such a young age it can just go too far. Yvonne’s family were very successful themselves. They loved Yvonne a lot but Yvonne just couldn’t handle it all. She felt constantly guilty and she became filled with hate. She ended up giving up swimming.
She joined university as a student at the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. There she attended a singing group where she met Jessica, a member of the Hong Kong Church of Christ. Yvonne attended a campus service. She was amazed at the passion she saw in the disciples’ hearts. As a pretty passionate person herself something clicked in her mind. She promptly started studying the Bible.
Yvonne learnt to overcome fear; she started to conquer her anxiety. She repented of her pride and lack of gratitude. She also had some really good talks with her family to resolve the past. She put people pleasing behind her and she started to strive to please God only.
Yvonne was baptised on August 7 2010. She was once a young woman who achieved a lot of worldly success. It came at a price though. Now she can strive for godly success, free of stress and anxiety.
