When I asked her if she ever thought of being on staff and doing this valuable work full time she said she owns her own business and that keeps her busy. But she added that she expends her energies for God and wants to serve him for as long as he can use her.
I’m a U.S. disciple currently retired in Mexico City and have been welcomed into one particular group that meets weekly in a sister’s home. They have provided me with an interpreter since I don’t speak Spanish - not yet, anyway. On two occasions we met at a restaurant and at a park. Although they are led by Lucky, she sees the abilities that each woman has and gives them opportunities to lead smaller groups, to teach and to pray. At the park session we split up in groups of 2 or 3 and went to different areas of the park to invite people to join us.
One visitor from Acapulco moved our hearts with her story of how she ended up in Mexico City. After her arrival she was passing the church building one Sunday morning, heard the singing and felt drawn to walk inside. Lucky befriended her and now she is studying the Bible. She’s very grateful to be with a group of women who clearly love God and is inspired by the teaching she’s receiving.
These women recently baptized the 90-year-old mother of an American sister who has lived here for 30 years. She brought her mother to Mexico from Texas to care for her and these disciples took her into their hearts. At times there are two or three individual studies going on with women who are friends, relatives or people whom they have met.
This past Saturday we met with Bible Groups of mature women from the 10-12 regions of the Mexico City Church. This gathering takes place twice a year to encourage one-another by the happenings in different regions. Each group calls themselves either "Tabitas, Noemis, Saras, Rutas or Abigails." (Spanish spellings). A lesson was given by Dolores Torres who became a disciple 17 years ago in Vera Cruz. She served as a missionary in different cities in Mexico before her recent move to Mexico City with her husband and daughter. Using the scriptures from Romans 12:1-2, she reminded us older women that we had been "transformed by the renewing of our minds" and encouraged us to use the experiences in our lives to transform others.
I've been a disciple for many years and have been in numerous Bible Groups but I'm encouraged by the consistency of my present group in that they meet weekly during the day even though they have to come from different parts of this huge city. I, myself, have learned to use the excellent Metro system and it delivers me safely. They, like their sisters throughout the world, have a love for God, his word and for the lost. There’s also a lot of laughter and genuine friendship among these mature women - they’re very generous with their love. We share a weekly meal in our group and celebrate birthdays regularly - mine was celebrated not once but twice! It could be their innate Latin nature but mix that with God’s love and you have a passionate ministry. I thank God that I'm a part of this vital group of women.
Bible Talk Impact - Mature Women's Bible Study Group-Mexico City
Written by Bobbye Trotter, Mexico City Church of Christ Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:08I'm writing about a group of mature women who meet in a weekly Bible Study in Mexico City. Some are either widowed, divorced or have unbelieving spouses and are mothers and grandmothers. They are led by Lucretia Gallegos (Lucky), who has been leading groups in the church for 13 years. Lucky devotes her time, talent, energy and money to help these women make other disciples and to mature them in Christ.
