An Abused Young Wife in Bangladesh Becomes a Lawyer

Women in Bangladesh have a hard life. Most experience a lot of suffering. Kiron Corraya is one such woman…As a child she used to work in the fields. At times she was in so much physical and emotional pain she would kneel down in the sugarcane field and pray to God to send Jesus to help her. Even though it took a long time God did hear her prayers…

As is so common in that part of the world her parents arranged her marriage when Kiron was seventeen. She had never met this man before and he turned out to be twenty years older than her. Soon after the wedding he left to go and work in Kuwait. He came back two years later and the physical and emotional torture started. Kiron’s husband would physically abuse her on a daily basis, sometimes torturing her with knives for hours on end. He tried to kill her many times. He was also unfaithful to her.

Kiron tried to appeal to her parents but they did not intervene. Once a girl is married she becomes part of her husband’s family and her own parents feel powerless. Finally after many years of such treatment Kiron got the courage to leave. That is a bold step in a country where such actions are frowned upon. Her husband hired contract killers to get rid of her. God protected Kiron however.

She kept praying and in 2000 she was invited to church, studied the Bible, and decided to change her life. God had finally answered her prayers. The trials she endured built her character and transformed her into a determined faithful young woman. Kiron went back to school, completed her university education (BA and MA) and she recently finished law school with the highest grades.

Kiron is very involved in the church, helps to lead singing, and has led several people to become disciples. Recently when Douglas Jacoby visited the Bangladesh church Kiron invited 80 of her friends. Not all came but the church of 50 members had an

attendance of over 300 on that day!
