These are wise and prophetic words. Those of us who are in the elite “40+ group” realize that changes are rampant and irreversible—not only in our bodies, but in our emotions and in our life situations. We, as disciples of Jesus, must navigate these times with rudders that are sure and sails that stretch and give with the blowing winds of change. To put it in another way, “We need to keep a stiff upper lip—even as we are gaining a double chin.” Then to put it all in the context of faith: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day,” 2 Corinthians 4:16.
